Our History
Around 1921 a local Carpenter and Undertakers business owned and managed by the late Provost McPherson – Grant was taken over by one of his employees’ the Willie Laing. Until 1969, the business operated from workshops located opposite their previous office at 110 High Street.
Willie Laing ran the business as a sole trader residing at 108 High Street. Now four generations later, the firm known as AW Laing Ltd continues to operate from Grantown-on-Spey as a house building and construction firm, specialising in manufacturing tailored Timber Frame Houses.
In the 1980’s, AW Laing Ltd began manufacturing Timber Frame House Kits to high Scandinavian standards for a Norwegian company delivering them to Western Scotland and the Shetlands. To ensure accurate and efficient manufacture of the house kits, the firm invested in a computerised upcut saw which guaranteed accuracy on cut lengths, producing a homogenous structure.
During that time,valuable awareness and insight was gained into the importance of insulation, and high performance joinery components. In the current age of high fuel costs, and considerable environmental focus to promote low carbon index buildings. AW Laing Ltd have the necessary professional experience to effectively deliver renewable energy, (utilising a range of energy sources from a mix of ground source heat pumps, solar panels, photo voltaic cells and biomass).
A number of these houses have optimised solar gain and heat mass. With new legislation requiring energy performance certificates which assess the buildings energy efficiency. All of the preceding systems, allied with a well insulated and sealed building, ensure all necessary requirements are fully achieved.
The business has developed considerably over the years, however the commitment remains to provide an effective service to all sizes of job, from replacing a door lock, windows and a new kitchen, (please visit our new recently refurbished kitchen showroom) to developing a bespoke house.
